Commonwealth
The period of the Commonwealth (1649-1660) is a facinating time in English history and the coinage bridges the gap between the hammered types of the early 17th century and the later milled coinage. The simple non-portrait 'puritan' issues were issued throughout the period, though the later coins with the anchor mint mark are very rare. This period was a time of experimentation and innovation where patterns of milled coins were produced (by Pierre Blondeau) with edge writing to combat both those who clipped coins and the forger alike. The Cromwell issues of 1657/8 are particularly impressive and well produced coins.
Please see our stock of Commonwealth coins listed below. If you have any specific requirements please let us know. We are always keen to purchase single items and collections of hammered coins.
