House of Stuart | Milled Gold

Charles II (1660-1685)
Gold Guinea
1675, fourth laureate bust right, elephant and castle below, rev. crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, (S.3345)
A couple of light scratches in front of face and a minor edge scrape at 12 o'clock (not a mount mark), well struck with no weakness, good very fine and most appealing for the type
Note:
The elephant and castle was the badge of the Royal African Company, a successful trading company with Africa and the New World throughout the 1670s and 1680s. Issues of such provenance marked coins related to the import and export of metal or coins, as at that time there were restrictions on British coins physically leaving the country. Due to the company's importation of gold and other alloys, it was allowed to export just as much coinage as the economic wealth it was bringing in, hence the issue of the elephant and castle marked coins
