House of Stuart | Hammered Silver

James I (1603-1625)
Silver Crown
Third coinage (1619-1625), mm. seeded rose (S.2664; N.2120; FRC VII/XIII)
Obverse mm. over escallop? Horseman quite worn but still quite attractive being on a full round flan and well struck. Of the highest rarity being one of only five known with this mintmark and with an impressive provenance.
Cooper states (BNJ vol. XXXIX) "A very interesting variety which by reason of the mint-mark 'seeded' rose (in use during 1620/1) must be assigned to the third coinage, although both dies are characteristic of the second coinage." This coin was Cooper's specimen and was picured in the above volume. It is also curious to find that only one crown was present in the Pyx trial in 1621.
