Stephen (1135-1154)
Silver Penny
Cross Moline, 'Watford' type
Nottingham mint, irregular issue with legends part erased, crowned bust right holding sceptre, rev. coss moline, +S[PEIN O]N: SNOT:, 1.14g, (S.1286, N.-). With a large chip and some striking perforations around inner circle (stable), but with an incredible portrait and very rare with the erased legend and of this mint, damage aside nearly extremely fine
Note:
Irregular issue with end of legend hammered out probably by hand after the coin was struck rather than from defaced/erased dies. Blows to the flan by hammereing may have caused part of the flan to break off, (see SCBI 17, 769)
Provenance:
Purchased Studio Coins, Harrogate Fair 25th April 2008
