Charles I (1625-1649)
Silver Pound
Oxford, 1643
Large horseman of fine workmanship trampling over arms, plume behind, R. three Oxford plumes and XX above Declaration, 1643 below, mm. plume/pellets, (S.2938, N.2397, Morr dies A-2, Brooker 863 - same dies). Struck on a slightly irregular flan but with excellent surfaces and in a superb state of preservation, good very fine/nearly extremely fine, extremely rare.
The superb die work of this piece is by Thomas Rawlins, pupil of Briot, who was appointed Graver of the Seals, Stamps and Medals at Oxford in 1643. The following year he produced dies for the celebrated 1644 Oxford crown, which shows a view of the city of Oxford behind the horseman and the 1644 pound with the date in cartouche which was struck from the same obverse die as the example offered here.
