House of Tudor | Hammered Silver

Edward VI (1547- 1553)
Silver Halfcrown
Fine silver issue
1553, large walking horse without plume, rev. cross fourchée over shield, legend reads MEVM, mm. tun, 15.00g, (S 2481, N 1936). Weakness to the centres but good fine and unique with this reverse
Note:-
Out of the 8 1553 halfcrowns known to exist, this is the only one with the DEVM MEVM reverse, thus unique. The DEVM MEVM reverse was also used on the 1552 issues, alluding that this was the first 1553 halfcrown made.
Although this coin is only in good fine fine condition, once one examines the other seven examples, then one will come to understand that all of these coins are very near the same grade. There was perhaps an issue with the relief of the die itself and this could account for why the issue was struck in low numbers and was soon discontinued
