Henry VIII (1509-1547)
Silver Groat
First coinage
1509-1526, crowned portrait of Henry VII right, pellet before CRA, reads FR, rev. long cross fourchée over shield, mm. portcullis over crowned T/portculis, 2.78g, (S.2316, N.1762). Good very fine and very rare
Note: Struck from an obverse die prepared for the Tournai groat, c.f lots 205 and 206 from the Motcomb sale of groats (Morton and Eden, 17th Mar 2016) which were perhaps inferior to this example and made £1400 and £2100 hammer respectively
