House of Stuart | Hammered Silver

Charles I (1625-1649)
Silver Crown
Tower mint under Parliament, Group V, 5th horseman
mm. sun, 29.97g (S.2762, c.f. Francis 43, FRC dies XXVI/-, c.f. Brooker 275), N.2199). From a reverse die unknown to Cooper (see below). Obverse legend a little double struck, deep glossy tone, VF, the reverse better. Rare.
Note:
The reverse appears to be from a previously unrecorded die. Cooper (BNJ XXXVII) shows two reverse dies (XXXIX and XL). On the first, the horizontal centre line of the shield points to the centre of the 'R' in REGNO, on the second it points to the right hand tip of the 'R'. On this example it is between the two.
Provenance:
Ex. Alan Barr collection
