House of Stuart | Hammered Silver

Charles I (1625-1649)
Silver Sixpence
Exeter mint, 16 rose 44
Small bust and letter from groat punches, large mark of value (over small?), Rev. with round shield with six scrolls, 2.73g (S.3087A, Brooker 1069 same dies, N. 2577). Usual weakness for Exeter coins and an old crease but a strong portrait and well struck shield. Good very fine and rare, especially so in this grade.
Provenance:
Ex. Ian Davison 16-09-08 bill of sale with coin (£1300)
Possibly ex. Ashley
Possible ex Parsons, Glendining 11-13 May 1954 (lot 492 pt)
Note: The bill of sale from 2008 lists this coin to be Ex Ashley, Parsons and Brooker. It is indeed supplied with both a Parsons and an Ashley ticket but no Brooker ticket. This coin is not in the Brooker Sylloge and therefore it is inconclusive whether the coin sold in the 1954 Parsons sale (lot 492 pt) was this one or Brooker 1068.
