Alfred the Great (871-899)
Silver Penny
Portrait type, Wessex Lunettes, Canterbury
Moneyer Herebald, obv. +AELBRED:REX, rev. lunettes broken in the centre of curve LDMO / HEREBEA / NETA with the H and E and N and E ligated, 0.76g, (S.1057, N.626). Some chips to the rim and with some deposit on the reverse, darkly toned as found, otherwise about very fine.
This type with broken lunettes is much rarer than the unbroken lunettes type.
