House of Stuart | Hammered Gold

Charles I (1625-1649)
Gold Triple Unite
Oxford mint
1642, crowned bust of king standing holding upright sword and laurel branch, Oxford plume behind, rev. declaration in continuous scroll, mark of value and three Oxford plumes above, date below, mm. plume, 27.27g, (S.2724/5, N.2383, B-J dies III/L1; Schneider -). Fields lightly smoothed and '2' of date clear although weakly struck, otherwise a most spectacular piece and extremely fine
Note:
The Spink standard catalogue has incorrectly changed in recent years for this issue. Spink 2724 and 2725 are now separated by date, S.2724 being 1642 and S.2725, 1643. It is not simply that 1643 is rarer than 1642, it is rather that the continuous scroll is rarer than the scroll in three lines when paired with this bust. This coin should therefore be S.2725 and is far rarer than the 1642 coin with the scroll in three lines.
