House of Stuart | Hammered Gold

James I (1603-1625)
Gold Unite
Second coinage
Second bust right holding orb and sceptre, rev. crowned shield between I R, mm. lis, 9.94g, (S.2618, N.2083). Some metal striations around face and a scrape on the reverse otherwise well centred and very fine or better
Note:
Unites valued at 20 shillings or one pound were first produced during the reign of King James I. The coin was named after the legends (rev: FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM UNAM - "I will make them one nation") on the coin indicating the king's intention of uniting his two kingdoms of England and Scotland. The value was increased to 22 shillings in 1612 due to an increase in the value of gold throughout Europe.
