Edward III (1327-1377)

Treaty period
Calais mint, French title omitted, king holding sword standing in ship, flag at stern, double saltire stops, no mark before ED, rev.C in centre, double saltire stops, mm. cross potent, 7.71g, (S.1504, N.1235(b)), TOGETHER with an ornate gilded presentation box/casket with a purple silk and velvet insert describing the coin and the finder. Inside the lid reads:
MEMORIAL OF THE FIRST JUBILEE, KING EDWARD III Reigned from 1327-1377
In possession of GEORGE FRATER HEATON, Drysalter, Colourman, and Varnish Manufacturer, Manors Viaduct Varnish Works, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
To the left of the coin reads:
This COIN, being called "NOBLE" was found during the recent excavation near the "Austin Friars" end of the Manors Viaduct, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
To the right of the coin reads:
INSCRIPTIONS. Obv. EDWARD. DEI. GRA. REX. ANGL. Z. DNS. HYS. AQVT. (Edward, by the Grace of God, King of England, Lord of Ireland and Aquitain). Rev. IHC. AVTEM. TRANSIENS. PER. MEDIV. ILLORVM. IBAT. (But Jesus going out, passed through the midst of them.
The coin now in a PCGS plastic holder and graded MS63, the box in good condition and unique. Please contact us for additional images.
Provenance:
This coin was found in the vicinity of Austin Friary when work commenced on the viaduct for Manors Station in 1887. The site manager sent it to Queen Victoria for a jubilee present but it was returned to the finder in the gilded casket you see here. A unique opportunity to find a mint state Edward III noble with a Royal provenance
