House of Stuart | Hammered Silver
Charles I (1625-1649)
Silver Shilling
Tower mint
Group A, 'lightweight issue' crowned bust 2 left with larger crown (outer arch jewelled), rev. long cross fourchee over shield, mm. cross calvary, 5.24g, (SCBC 2782, N.2216). A little weakly struck on and before the face, otherwise good very fine and very rare.
Note: Introduced to deal with fluctuating bullion prices, the lightweight issue was a short-lived issue produced for roughly five weeks following an 11th August 1626 commission. Sometimes they can be hard to distinguish, but examples such as this with a full flan and low weight are clearly of this rare issue.
