Elizabeth I (1558-603)
Silver Threepence
Third and fourth issues
1563, crowned bust left, Tudor rose behind, rev. long cross fourchee over shield, date above, mm. pheon, 1.55g, (SCBC 2565, N.1998). Toned and nearly very fine, the date very rare, especially without the over-date
Note:
Two examples were sold in similar grades in the Comber sale (pt III) in 2022, a 1563 over 2 (£500 inc premium) and a 1563 without the over-date (£660 inc premium)
Collecting hints:
In general Elizabeth I threepences are fairly common and can be obtained in most grades, however like the sixpences of this reign, some dates are common, others rare. Collectors should look for a good portrait and clear date
