1900, Daily Mail Kipling Prize
Boer War, "The Absent Minded Beggar" medal 1900 in silver by Spink, obv: standing figure of "the Gentleman in Khaki", rifle at the ready, rev. union jack around laurel, shamrock, rose and thistle, 45mm, 59.39g, (E.1851). Light tone, almost as struck
Note: This medal was sold by Spink & Son and advertised in the Daily Mail to raise money for the Kipling Poem War Fund. This aimed to assist those who were widowed and orphaned as a result of the South African war. The soldier depicted inspired the poem "The Absent Minded Beggar" by Rudyard Kipling.
