House of Tudor | Hammered Silver

Henry VIII (1509-1547)
Silver Groat
Second coinage 1526-44
Laker bust D, large square face with Roman nose, Lombardic lettering, mm. sunburst, 2.44g, (S.2337E, N1797). A couple of tiny pinholes at the outer beaded circle near the N of HENRIC, otherwise very fine with two excellent mint marks.
Provenance: Ex. Ivan Buck collection, Spink, 30th Nov, 2005, lot 386
Note: In his 1955 British Numismatic Journal article on the coins of King Henry VIII, WJW Potter hypothesised that the sunburst mint mark was used to commemorate the birth of the only son of King Henry VIII, Prince Edward VI, in 1537. The mark was used for only a short period of time during that year.
