Tower mint, Group E, fifth Aberystwith bust

Type 4.3, smaller bust with single arched crown, large XII, mm. anchor (shank vertical both sides), 5.96g, (S.2796, N.2229, Sharp F3/1). Flan slightly untidy but with a strong portrait, good very fine and almost as struck.

Provenance:

From the Bedale hoard discovered in 2009 which contained coins from Edward VI to Charles I. This coin, struck in 1638-9 is right at the end of this period and could not have circulated for more than a few years before being buried during the English Civil War.
