Charles I (1625-1649)
Silver Shilling
Tower mint, group D, type 3a
No inner circles, R. round garnished shield, mm. tun, 6.14g (S.2791, ESC. 2225, Sharp E3/2). Fairly well struck on a full flan, reverse a little off-centre. A really good very fine, partly lustrous and much as struck.
Provenance:
From the Bedale hoard discovered in 2009 which contained coins from Edward VI to Charles I. This coin, struck in 1636-8 is right at the end of this period and could not have circulated for more than a few years before being buried during the English Civil War.
