House of Stuart | Hammered Gold

Charles I (1625-1649)
Gold Double Crown
Group C, third bust
Class Ib, bust 5 with more domed crown, mm. plume, (S.2701, N.2166(b), c.f. Schneider 134 and Brooker 157). Tiny edge nick at 9 o'clock, very fine and rare.
Note: Carefully struck or machine struck and probably 'a Briot "model" coin'. It is likely that these pieces were struck from dies prepared by Briot as 'models' for his engravers. At this time Briot began work on his own milled issue and he provided a larger than normal number of master punches and carefully executed proofs for his workers. It appears that some of the dies were subsequently released for general use.
The plume mintmark is rare on double-crowns. This example also has the bust breaking the legend at 6 o'clock, a feature not present on the examples in both the Schneider or Brooker collections.
